Why are those old famous inventors so creative????

Claude Elwood Shannon,
who is the person dedicated to cryptography and  the best contribute on 
the world war 2 in that field. whatever, he did excellent during in master 
and Phd. Even those papers he proposed I totally don't understand at all, 
why are they so smart ???
